Server Outage explained
- Sometime around 12:45am, the server rebooted. Cause unknown, trying to determine what the cause was.
- At some point either at the same time, or at some point prior, the CNAME record (an alias for the machines actual DNS entry) muck.narniamuck.org got screwed up. This meant when I tried to connect to the machine to figure out why the game wasn't running, I couldn't.
- I assumed the machine was down, forced a reboot through the control panel (which didn't fix the CNAME record).
- Since I couldn't connect, I contacted support.
- They got back to me and said that they rebooted it...which prompted further experimentation. I found the CNAME problem.
- I edited the CNAME record and "changed" it to the exact same value. Either that, or something DH has done in the meantime appears to have resolved the issue.
...
Sorry we had such a long outage, it took a bit to figure out where the problem(s) were. I'd still like to know the original cause of the problem, in hopes of preventing such an outage in the future.
